Important atributes for ecological purchasing

Ecological purchasing is an approach aimed at reducing the environmental impacts associated with the consumption of products and services and strengthening market demand for products and services with better environmental performance than that of existing conventional products and services. The central point of the whole concept of ecological purchasing is related to the integration of environmental criteria in the procurement of products and services.

The following are examples of key attributes to consider when purchasing ecologically:

  • Recycled material content
  • Recyclability (for example, can the material actually be recycled in your area or where your product will be consumed?)
  • Product disassembly potential
  • Durability
  • Reuse
  • Pre and post-consumed materials
  • Collection policy
  • Natural products
  • Energy efficiency
  • Water consumption efficiency
  • Origin of products
  • Third party certification (eg. Energy Star, FSC, PEFC, Organic Production certification, Integrated Production certification, etc.)
Third party certification

When making purchasing decisions, you will be able to consider a wide range of environmental, social and economic factors associated with a product, thus considering the entire product life cycle, where possible.

Reduce the environmental impacts associated with the consumption of products and services and strengthen market demand for products and services with better environmental performance than conventional products and services.
